A week NOT for the weak!

Wow, what a week we’ve all got coming up. CST testing, AP-cramming, elections for many club offices and, of course ... prom! This is my last chance to say something about prom, so allow me to provide a couple of last-minute tips, some of these directly from the man himself, principal Ron McCowan.

1) Remember, make sure you're not on the Non-Privileged list (detentions, truancies, and other criminal acts!) or you can't attend the dance.

2) Stay robed the entire evening!

3) Don't drink or be generally irresponsible (see #2 above!) because the only thing worse than drinking is not being able to remember the amazing night you are bound to have.

4) This year’s prom is on a Hornblower cruise ship on San Diego Bay. So, don't rock the boat! Literally, or you could tip it over. Sure, I know what you’re thinking, it's a big ship, but … remember a little boat called … the TITANIC? That’s right; the REAL reason the Titanic sank was because of the 1912 Southampton, England senior prom! (For some reason, Principal McCowan did NOT mention this as one of his concerns. Strange. Very strange!)

5) Have fun! It's going to be a night you'll cherish for the rest of your life!

Until 18, soccer's legal!:

Because there has been such a demand for older kids to play Valley Center Youth Soccer (VCYS) is now expanding its age range all the way up to 18. VCYS is not high school soccer but recreational soccer that begins in the fall before high school soccer starts in the winter. This can be very beneficial if you want to tryout for high school soccer because it allows you to keep your chops up and stay in shape. Signups are coming up fast so be sure to contact coach Tom Litchfield at president@vcys.org or visit their website www.vcys.org to sign up!

VCTV Awards and feature film:

This Friday is the annual VCTV Awards Ceremony in which the video department will award VCHS filmmakers and their films in categories such as: Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Journalist and Best Film of the Year.

After the awards ceremony VCTV will be premiering their roughly hour-long film, "The Longest Year," about the humorous escapes of a group of high schol seniors. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and costs $5.00.

Here's something I betcha didn't know:

Speaking of making films, this weekend I attended the Fallbrook Film Festival to support my own film, "Mystery High," which was a finalist in the Young Filmmaker category. I was there all three days attending tons of incredibly cool FREE workshops and meeting some of the biggest names in the business -- like Adam McKay, the director/writer of some of Will Ferrell’s biggest comedies including “Anchorman” and “Talladega Nights.”

Sadly, the festival organizers were surprised to see not a single student from Valley Center (except my brother, Alex!), even after several mentions in this newspaper and this very column. I was disappointed because I wanted all those heavy-duty pros to see some of the fantastic work our own VCHS film department has done.

Still, for me, it was an experience I’ll never forget. I made a ton of business connections that have already started helping my career.
