Looking Jagward

I hope you all had a wonderful break and didn’t gain too many pounds from Thanksgiving dinner! As we lace up our running shoes and prepare to sprint these few (only four!) weeks before Christmas break, let’s see where we’re headed between now and then and beyond.

Winterfest:

Winterfest, a huge fundraiser for all the clubs on campus, will take place the last Friday before Christmas break. Winterfest is where all the clubs (if you’re in a club, you’d better sign up soon) set up tables in the quad and sell food to hungry students at lunch. Everything is priced very reasonably ($5-10 max for all any girl can eat -- unless she has a boyfriend, then TRIPLE that!). The clubs get to keep all the money from the food they sell so it’s a great way to help out your favorite clubs. For you clubs, it’s a great way to let people know what you represent while making a bunch of money at the same time.

Some food items that were big hits in the past include: Panda Express (Asian club!), Jilberto’s, sub sandwiches, cookies, strawberry short cake, hot cocoa, root beer floats ... so many more. You’ll just have to go see for yourself!

Band and Choir Concerts:

This December you can look forward to three VCHS musical concerts, all at the Maxine: Winter Band Concert on the 10th, Fall Band Banquet on the 17th, and Winter Choral Concert on the 18th. What a great way to fill your holiday season with music and cheer!

High School Musical:

High School Musical, being vigorously rehearsed as we speak, will be hitting our Maxine stage in January. Choir teacher Laralee Beck is one of the play’s directors and will also conduct the pit orchestra. Dance teacher Tammy Merrick is also directing and will also choreograph the production. The show will be performed evenings Jan. 17-19 with a matinee on the 19th. Don’t miss this great show. More details posted here as we come up on opening night!

Here’s something I betcha didn’t know:

Junior Alex Herbert placed first in the county-wide “Role About” drama competition held just two weeks ago at Mission Viejo High School. Alex competed in what’s called a “cold reading” -- no, that doesn’t mean you have to read a passage from Polar Express while your sick with the flu, standing in a bucket of ice in your underwear! It basically means you have to read a monologue that you have never seen before. You have just 10 minutes to prepare and then perform it before the judges and all the other kids you’re competing against (who try not to give you mean looks but you KNOW what they’re thinking!). Then the judges ask you to perform the same piece again in a completely different way. If you move up to finals, as Alex did, you get to do it all over again with another monologue. Congrats Herbie, you earned it!
