Cupid’s Arrow in Mid-flight

While our main job while we’re in school is to learn lots of (sometimes questionable!) stuff and get the best grades possible, we nonetheless find ourselves smack dab in the middle of the year’s two most romantic events: Valentine’s Day and the Sadie Hawkins dance (where the girls get to ask out the guys). So ladies, allow me to share some of my favorite Sadie’s tips as you girls prepare for the hunt.

This is your time to shine, gals, but don’t overwhelm the poor guy. For the most part, guys like to be the ones who make the big gestures. So let ‘em.

Make it creative and unique. Go down in history for asking a guy to Sadie’s in a way no one has ever thought up before.

Don’t set yourself up for a fall. Make sure ahead of time that the guy at least kinda likes you. If you’re nervous about asking him, make the fact that we high schoolers are enormous blabbermouth work to your benefit. Casually drop the fact that you like the boy at any spot in the rushing river of teen gossip. Do something for a couple of minutes. Your answer awaits.

Now, you guys, if a girl that you’re not into asks you to Sadie’s; bear in mind how nervous she probably was asking you and remember how you felt the last time you got rejected, so be cool and let her down easy, okay?

Sadies will be Mar. 16 in the High School gymnasium. Check here in a couple weeks for specifics on times and prices. IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure to take a peek at the non-privilege and in-danger list before you plan your whole Sadie’s evening out (hint: you DON’T want your name to be on there).

Here’s Something I Betcha Didn’t Know:

I know of a lot of couples who got each other candy, roses, hugs, teddy bears and kisses (both the chocolate and the communicable disease-spreading kind), for Valentine’s Day this year, but my favorite story features our very own ASB President, Dan Eccles. Dan took the time to prepare a romantic evening for girlfriend, Lindsay Clayton, complete with dinner, candles and roses -- the whole shebang. Then, after dinner, Dan sat down at the piano and played Lindsay a love song that he had rehearsed for days.

So, fellas, that’s the bar you have to clear next year. It might be hard, but if you really care, then it’ll just come to you. Hey, I hear Paris is lovely this time of year!
