Alex Carr's The Jaguars' Spot column for Wed., Apr. 07, 2010

Going once, going twice, sold!

Welcome back to school everyone! Hope you all had a fantastic Spring Break and did something fun and exciting. I know I did, I was invited to go on a kayaking trip on the Colorado with a bunch of people including VCHS sophomore Everett Newcomb and this guy named ... I think it was McCowan ... yea, Ron McCowan, that's it. Anyway, on the trip principal Mac and I caught up on some cool things going on at the high school I'll be talking about in later columns.

VCHS has some great stuff planned to get us back into the school gear. Coming up Saturday, April 10, the place to be is the annual Jaguar Auction.

Eleven years ago, Jag mom Julie Stroh had the idea of an auction to raise money for her local high school. The idea took off and the Jaguar Auction has been raising money for the high school every since. In fact, it’s the biggest fundraiser of the year. By far. Last year the auction raised about $70,000!

I chatted with VCHS teacher and Jaguar Auction Foundation board member Colleen Murphy who explained how the auction works. “As they enter the high school gymnasium, guests enjoy appetizers and start looking over the programs containing a list of all the items being sold in both the live and silent auctions.”

“We have great stuff going for auction this year,” Mrs. Murphy added. “There are around 350 different items going on sale donated by companies and businesses from all over North County.”

The auction raises money for new sports equipment and uniforms. It also donated quite a bit to make our new turf field a reality. Every year they give money for scholarships. And that’s just the beginning.

Clubs and sports have excitedly been selling tickets all over VC and the high school for the past month or so. The kids get to keep 80% of ticket sales they bring in (each ticket is about $10) and use that money for their respective sport of club.

Tell me about it!:

A lot of girls around campus have told me how excited they are about the upcoming Mr. Jaguar competition (think Miss America, only with guys!).

A few seniors at VCHS have been selected to compete for the title which, if won, will get them a long way toward the coveted reputation as being the dreamiest bachelor at the high school. You know, I’d better quit right there or they might all get together and give a stern reprimand ... right after their bikini waxing session!

“I can’t wait for the Mr. Jaguar contest,” said ASB member, Morgan Boberg. “We have some great contestants, it’s gonna be really tough to find a winner!”

Next week, ASB will be hosting semi-contests in the quad to get the word out.

The Mr. Jaguar competition will take place Thursday, April 15 at the Maxine Theater.
